Thought-provoking article, Kristen. Your writing is delicious, revealing and, at the same time, disturbing. It is a keen reflection of Diane Arbus’s view of life through her black-and-white decisively-captured moments of marginalized people. I taught photography at the same New York School where Arbus had taught years earlier. Her legacy was inescapably apparent throughout the department and sadly infused with the tragedy of her demise. To me every photograph she took seemed to represent a cry for help; emanating from both her and from the twisted souls looking out from her silvery prints. You’ve brought lots of memories flooding back and rekindled many of my own inner ponderings. Thank you for the journey through your words.
